WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal safety officials say they will investigate an engine fire that was discovered on a United Airlines Boeing 737 Max after the plane landed in Newark, New Jersey. The National Transportation Safety Board disclosed the investigation Friday, when it issued a preliminary report on the June 28 incident. No one was injured.Boeing declined to comment, referring inquiries to the NTSB and United, which said it too was investigating. One of the plane’s two engines caught fire after the plane completed a flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Pilots said they noticed a fire-warning indicator for the left engine as they taxied to the gate at Newark Liberty International Airport. They shut down the engine and discharged a bottle of fire retardant, and the warning indicator flicked off, according to the NTSB.There was no smoke or fire coming from the engine, but the plane was towed to the gate, where maintenance crews saw signs of fuel leaking from the engine, and heat damage...

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — An avid reader, Iga Swiatek knows how to contextualize her Wimbledon experiences. Her third-round exit last year after winning the French Open was a disappointment. The top-ranked Swiatek cleared that hurdle Friday at the All England Club, dispatching 30th-seeded Petra Martic 6-2, 7-5 to reach the fourth round.“It’s just a totally different chapter,” the 22-year-old Pole said. The four-time Grand Slam champion can reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal when she faces 14th-seeded Belinda Bencic on Sunday.Swiatek has said she felt a lot of pressure last year from high expectations and the 35-match winning streak she carried into Wimbledon.“I do feel more relaxed. I think also because I won Roland Garros and I feel like after that the pressure is a little bit off because I reached my goal kind of for the season,” she said. “I don’t have to think about anything else other than playing. … I feel like I have more kind of, I don’t know, free space in my head t...

DALLAS (AP) — Two men were arrested Friday in a shooting that killed three people and injured eight others as a crowd of hundreds gathered in a Texas neighborhood on the eve of the Fourth of July, police said.Christopher Redic Jr., 20, and Brandon Williams, 19, were both taken into custody on murder charges related to the shooting late July 3 in the Fort Worth neighborhood of Como, Fort Worth police Chief Neil Noakes said. Noakes said investigators believe the shooting was gang-related and followed some kind of altercation. He said there could be additional arrests. Police had previously said several men fired indiscriminately into the crowd. The shooting erupted about two hours after the end of the Independence Day celebration called ComoFest in the historically Black neighborhood. The celebration had been held in a park several blocks away from the area where the shots were fired.Police have said the shooting on Horne Street was “separate from and unrelated to ComoFest.” Noakes ref...

Colorado regulators consider ban on sale of gas-powered lawn equipment

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:09:00 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- Gas-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers and chainsaws could soon be harder to find in Colorado stores. The Regional Air Quality Council voted Friday to ban the sale of small gas-powered lawn tools in an effort to improve air quality along the Front Range. Here’s how you can check the air quality for where you live If approved by the state, the measure would begin in 2025. "Cars and trucks are primary contributors to our air quality in the summer months," Mike Silverstein said. "But lawn and garden equipment is too."Silverstein and the council voted nearly unanimously on the proposal, which would also require commercial operators like landscaping companies to switch to electric lawn mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers by 2026. Riding lawn mowers would not be included in the regulation, which would also only include the months of June, July and August. Homeowners with gas-powered tools would still be allowed to use them."The individual can use whateve...

At least 6 organizations opt against holding conventions in Broward; some cite concerns over Florida’s ‘political climate’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:09:00 GMT

Broward County officials say several groups have had a change of heart about holding their events there, and some are blaming the state of politics in Florida. The group Visit Lauderdale works with organizations across the country to bring them to Broward. The group’s CEO, Stacy Ritter, said there is a clear pattern when it comes to recent cancellations.“I don’t think any of us has ever seen politics creep into tourism,” said Ritter. But officials with Visit Lauderdale say that’s exactly with about half a dozen organizations that opted out of holding their conventions in Broward.“Tourism has always transcended politics. People travel where they’d like to go,” said Ritter. But despite the sun and the sand, some groups are deciding to go elsewhere, according to a spreadsheet provided to 7News.One of those groups explained, “We were so close on this one … but group decided to pull out of Florida due to concerns about what the gov...

Unsettled weather returns

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:09:00 GMT

After a couple of sunny days for most of the area, unsettled weather will slowly work its way back into New England the next few days. Saturday will feature more clouds, especially along the shoreline as a coastal storm system passes out to sea. Meanwhile in central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire a stalled front will produce afternoon showers and storms for some. The front remains in the area on Sunday but also remains stalled, meaning the system will be weaker but could still produce a shower or storm into the afternoon, even for locations a little closer to the coast. Widespread rain moves in on Monday as a second cold front moves through the area with scattered showers and storms in the forecast.
