SANTA CLARA — With Sam Darnold reportedly locking down the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback job, the team is exploring options on what to do with Trey Lance, a league source said Wednesday.A day earlier, coach Kyle Shanahan said he would consider rotating both Darnold and Lance as the backup to Brock Purdy, who has made a remarkable recovery from March elbow surgery to retain the starting role he flourished in last season.Rather than retain Lance as the No. 3 quarterback, the 49ers appear willing to part with him after just four starts in two seasons, after they moved up to draft him No. 3 overall in 2021.Lance was not on the field to begin Wednesday’s practice.News of Darnold securing the No. 2 job was first reported by NFL Network, about an hour before practice. Friday marks the 49ers’ final preseason game, a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi’s Stadium.Darnold has 56 career starts over five seasons with the Jets and Panthers, with 61 tou...Man arrested with multiple weapons, Chucky mask in Hayward

(KRON) -- A man was recently arrested for possessing multiple weapons after fleeing from a police officer, according to the Hayward Police Department. A Hayward police officer attempted a traffic stop on a car with an equipment violation. The driver fled from the officer, driving through a red light before turning onto the next street. The officer did not attempt to pursue the car once he saw where the driver was headed. Instead, the officer waited until the car parked a short distance away, police said. NEW YORK (AP) — A golfer was arrested and accused of beating a goose to death with a golf club at a New York course in a misguided attempt to put it out of its misery, a county official said Wednesday.Witnesses say the man decided to kill the Canada goose after it was struck with a golf ball last week at the Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac, said Ken Ross, chief of the county’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He said a veterinarian who examined the animal’s remains said it would’ve likely survived the ball strike and was probably just dazed.Officers from the SPCA’s law enforcement division and the state Department of Environmental Conservation police responded to the call from the golf course on Friday, Ross said.Witnesses told officers that “one of the golfers allegedly went over to the goose and made comments that he was going to put it out of its misery” after the ball smacked into the bird, Ross said. The man beat the goose in a way t...South Korea says North Korea has launched a long-range rocket

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is rallying toward its best day since June on Wednesday as pressure that’s built up on stocks from the bond market relaxed a bit. The S&P 500 was 1.1% higher in late trading, trimming its loss for what’s been a dismal August so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 173 points, or 0.5%, at 34,462 with a little less than an hour remaining in trading. The Nasdaq composite jumped 1.7%. Big Tech stocks and others that benefit from easier interest rates led the way. They got some relief as the 10-year Treasury yield eased back further from its highest level since 2007 after a report suggested the U.S. economy may be cooling.A 2.2% gain for Apple’s stock and 1.7% climb for Microsoft shares were two of the strongest forces pushing the S&P 500 upward.Nvidia, another one of the market’s most influential stocks, rose 2.8% ahead of its latest profit report, scheduled to come out after the market closes for the day. WASHINGTON (AP) — Most octopuses lead solitary lives. So scientists were startled to find thousands of octopus huddled together, protecting their eggs at the bottom of the ocean off the central California coast. Now researchers may have solved the mystery of why these pearl octopus congregate: Heat seeping up from the base of an extinct underwater volcano helps their eggs hatch faster.“There are clear advantages of basically sitting in this natural hot tub,” said Janet Voight, an octopus biologist at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and co-author of the study, which was published Wednesday in Science Advances. The researchers calculated that the heated nest location more than halved the time it took for eggs laid there to hatch — reducing the risk of being munched by snails, shrimp and other predators. The nesting site, which the scientists dubbed an “octopus garden,” was first discovered in 2018 by researchers from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and other i...The first 2024 Republican presidential debate is set to kick off in Milwaukee. KELOWNA, British Columbia (AP) — Firefighters in a scenic region of British Columbia said Wednesday that heavy rain overnight helped douse wildfires that forced the evacuation of thousands of people from the Canadian province, as the cost of the devastating fires became clearer.Officials in southern British Columbia said 174 properties were partially or totally damaged by the fires that raged for days in the Okanagan Valley threatening towns in the Kelowna area, a summer destination about 90 miles (150 kilometers) north of the U.S. border.“Things are looking good,” West Kelowna fire Chief Jason Brolund said.“It rained last night and that’s a very positive sign.
